Other than being listed as a “previous issue” on her brother Thomas’s birth certificate a birth registration for Mary has not been found.   It is rumoured that Mary was snatched away by her father never to be seen again

About this time Eleanor (Ellen) leaves George Hayes for American Oliver Smith.

Oliver H Smith.     b.  1824.  Kentucky  USA.   (parents:  William and Malinda Smith, nee, Hawes.)    Believed to have come to Australia  circa,  1858, with two surviving sons (Tom and Jack) from a marriage in America.

On the 25th May 1872 Oliver Marries Ann Morgan, Ellen’s mid-wife. They buy Dennis Connolly’s boarding house in Cowa (Upper Dargo) where they bring up the kids.
